Mr Johnson is expected to fold under the pressure of senior Tory rebels and potentially delay any announcement of new measures until next week.

Boris Johnson today is not expected to announce any changes to current Covid measures in England.

The Prime Minister is the last leader of the four nations to set out any new proposals on restrictions.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, have all curbed hospitality with the Scots no longer able to party at nightclubs from today.

Senior Tories from the powerful 1922 Committee of backbenchers expressed their fury at the prospect of new restrictions being rolled out before New Year's Day.

Mr Johnson is expected to fold under their pressure and potentially delay the announcement of new measures until next week.

Any minute now, Mr Johnson will chair a virtual meeting from his Chequers residence, analysing the latest Covid statistics.

England's Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty and the Government's scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance will share their insights with the PM.

Chris Hopson, CEO of NHS Providers has urged officials to scrutinise the data carefully and let it play out "over the next few days".

While he hopes Downing Street officials will be open to rolling out new restrictions, Mr Hopson admitted the latest data may not express a need for it.

He told Times Radio: "So in other words, over the last couple of days, we've had lots of younger people mixing with older adults.

"And we clearly need to see what impact that's going to have. So where we are, is we're still looking at the data. And we need to let that data play out over the next few days."

Just before Christmas, a record 122,186 Covid cases were reported across the UK in just 24 hours.

Statistics have not been released for three days, leaving experts worried on how things could have escalated over Christmas.

Dr Julia Patterson told Sky News: "Things are really bad, it's understandable that people are reluctant to think about these restrictions."

She added: "This government has chosen not to act early with the omicron variant. We haven't had any data over the last coupe days but NHS staff are saying the service is under enormous pressure."
